After preaching yesterday on “One Lawgiver & One Judge,” I’m gripped by the ease at which it is for all of us to slander and judge one another. When our desire for pleasure is shaken, rocked, unsatisfied, bypassed, or put off, our default at times is slander and judgment. Why is that? Because we are sinners and our flesh is persistently motivated to stay priority number one; to never be unsatisfied, longing or left out…
The Scriptures are so right when they say, “For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot (Romans 8:7).” Everyday is a reminder that our flesh is antagonistic to God. And if our aim in life is for our pleasure to always be satisfied, then that’s counterproductive to growth in Christ.
Taking pleasure in our flesh will always lead to disobedience to God’s law, especially the law of love (James 2:8). As a hedonist by nature, my ultimate pleasure must be found in God by grace through faith and not in my flesh in order to truly honor God in my heart and tongue.
And here’s our only hope — hedonism, slander, condemnation, and judgment were all nailed to the cross in the body of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. And because of Him, we can have victory over all sin.
May our hearts delight in God, and may we love our neighbor truly as ourselves through the power of the Holy Spirit and not by any strength or perceived righteousness of our own.
